Patch Local News and Directory

Patch hones in on local happenings in neighborhoods across the United States, filling residents in on news, events and businesses in their area. Patch offers a unique website for each city that it covers; while Patch is not available in every town, it does cater to upwards of 1,000 communities, and more are to be added in the future.

Upon reaching the main Patch website, users are requested to enter a zip code, and are then directed to their local Patch site. Each city site features a headline news story and less prominent stories, as well as events listings, reader polls, Patch blogs by local residents and select listings from the Patch business directories. Readers are encouraged to send in news tips, events and other announcements. Each Patch city site also features headings for categories such as news, events, photos and videos, traffic and local real estate.

Local businesses may be featured on the Patch home page, but the directory also provides opportunity for exposure. Visitors to the site can browse through business categories such as arts & entertainment, insurance, nightlife, food & dining and sports & fitness, or they may enter their own category in the search field of the main Directory page. The results page shows a list of businesses with a photo, business name, address, phone number and star rating (if users have reviewed the merchant). Upon clicking on a listing, users may view additional details such as payment options, hours, signature products and more.

Patch is owned by AOL and was created in 2007 by Tim Armstrong, who became CEO of AOL in 2009. In addition to standard listings, Patch offers advertising options for local business owners and managers who seek greater online exposure. Companies must contact the Patch sales team to discuss advertising options.
